Sophia Group was begun in the 1990's by President Ikeda to give the women of SGI an opportunity for more in-depth study. Women have always gathered to share ideas and develop themselves. They have been the engine of Buddhist study.

At present the Sophia has two types of meeting — Buddhism 101, for new members, currently open to all divisions. Advanced Sophia is for more experienced Women's Division members. It is normally held on the third Saturday of the month. Our study material is the book, Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, a companion piece to the Lotus Sutra, the basic scripture, that forms the heart of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism.
